Norway | Gillavarri | chapter 2/5

Dopo una giornata pazzesca sul Tafeltinden il meteo norvegese ha deciso di non essere clemente due giorni di fila e di “offrirci” un giorno di cielo cupo. Se fossimo a casa con queste previsioni probabilmente non ci alzeremmo dal divano, ma qui, in Norvegia, fa figo pure quello, rendendo l’atmosfera a modo suo un po’ mistica. 

La meta odierna è il Gillavarri. La cosa che che rende la gita a modo suo unica, è il fatto di prendere il traghetto da Lyngseidet a Olderdalen. E ancora di più il fatto di salirci a piedi e poter mettere gli sci letteralmente appena scesi sull’altra sponda. 

Il sole è nascosto dietro ad una fitta coltre di nuvole. Partiamo a suon di inversioni in un fitto boschetto prima di sbucare nelle parte più alta di questo panettone. Con Dave e Steve prendiamo un bel ritmo e arriviamo in cima con un mezzo spiraglio di un timidissimo sole. Ci gustiamo il panorama e constatiamo di come, nonostante la visibilità non sia delle migliori, la neve invece sembra non deluderci.

Selfie di vetta e siamo pronti a scendere. Sotto di noi il mare è nero e fa risaltare ancora di più queste montagne ed il bianco della neve che le accompagna fino al mare. Scendiamo a turno, un po’ per godere appieno della discesa e non farla finire troppo presto, un po’ per concedermi di poter fotografare tutti. 

Arrivati in fondo ripercorriamo la strada innevata che ci porterà al traghetto, che scopriremo poi partire dopo un’ora. Cerchiamo un posticino dove scaldarci ma l’unica cosa che troviamo aperta è un supermarket dove c’è un tavolino con “free coffee”. Ci scaldiamo con le tazze di carta tra le mani e parliamo di come anche questa giornata abbia lasciato il segno nelle nostre menti.

Prendere il traghetto, attraversare la strada già con gli sci ai piedi (si, le strade potrebbero essere tranquillamente delle piste battute), il caffè al supermercato. Momenti semplici ma che aggiungono un pizzico di particolarità a questa esperienza. 

I nostri occhi durante la mezz’ora di traghetto sono appiccicati verso il nord del fiordo, ci hanno detto che potremmo vedere delle balene, e noi, come dei bambini, ci crediamo 😉

After a crazy day on Tafeltinden the Norwegian weather decided not to be kind two days in a row and to “offer” us a day of gloomy sky. If we were at home with this forecast we probably wouldn’t get off the bed, but here in Norway, that’s cool too, making the atmosphere a little mystical in its own way.

Today’s goal is Gillavarri. What makes the trip unique, is taking the ferry from Lyngseidet to Olderdalen. And probably best thing is that you can start walking on your skis as you get off the ferry.

The sun is hidden behind a thick blanket of clouds. We set off with kick turns in a tree section before emerging in the highest part of this mountain. With Dave and Steve we set a good pace and we reach the top with a tiny bit of a very shy sun. We enjoy the view and although the visibility is not the best, the snow looks promising on the way down.

Summit selfie and we are ready to descend. Below us the sea is black and the contrast between it ad the mountains covered in snow is even more fascinating. We go down one at the time, partly to fully enjoy the descent and not let it end too soon, partly to allow me to be able to photograph everyone.

At the bottom, we take the road to the ferry, which we will then discover leaving after an hour. We look for a little place to warm up but the only thing we find open is a supermarket where there is a table with “free coffee”. We warm up with paper mugs in our hands and talk about how this day has left its mark on our minds.

Taking the ferry, crossing the road with your skis on (yes, the roads could easily be green slopes), drinking a coffee at the supermarket. Simple moments that make this experience one of a kind .

Our eyes during the half hour ferry are stuck towards the north of the fjord, we were told that we could see whales, and we, like children, believe it 😉
